BACK TO SCHOOL MESSAGE - HONORING OUR TEACHERS

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As my two daughters begin their junior year in high school and college, respectively, and as we prepare to embark on another school year, I find myself again reflecting on the immense value our dedicated teachers and other essential school employees, from administrators to custodians, school nurses to cafeteria staff, bring to our school system in creating a safe and nurturing environment for our students.

Our teachers are the unsung heroes of our communities, selflessly devoting their time and energy to ensure that every child has access to quality education. From sparking curiosity in young minds to fostering a love for learning, teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators. I still remember the teachers who made such an impact on me in my formative years. Here's to a successful and fulfilling academic year ahead as you send your children and grandchildren off to school this month!

We concluded the second session of the 2023-2024 legislative term in May, and I am attaching a copy of my 2024 End of Session Legislative Update for those who did not receive it or those who would like another copy. I am very pleased that we have made retaining and recruiting teachers one of our major priorities. Fortunately, we continue to have an unprecedented amount of funding coming from the federal infrastructure bill and other monies to invest back into our communities and state. I have outlined how these funds will be allocated and discuss other important bills in this newsletter.

As a female member of the General Assembly, I am able to provide a $1,000 one-time scholarship to a female high school senior, residing in my house district, who will be attending a South Carolina university, college, or technical college in the fall. The scholarship is based on several criteria including, but not limited to, academics, leadership skills, and extra-curricular activities. This year, I was able to award a combined $2,000 one-time scholarship to three recipients. The recipients of the Representative Beth Bernstein Women’s Leadership Scholarship award are Harmonie Frederick, Chandler Lawton, and Margaret "Megan" Whitley. All are part of this year's graduating class at Spring Valley High School. Harmonie and Chandler will be attending the University of South Carolina while Megan will be attending Midland's Technical College.
